Bakheng temple is founded at about 900, distributed to the king Yasovarman I : Bakheng is posed on the top (60m) of the three hills which emerge from the plain, just like contemporary temples of Phnom Krom (137m) at the edge of a big lake, and those of Phnom Bok (235m) in the North-East. It was the centre of the first town Angkorian whose enclosure, partly to cover today by the town of Angkor Thom, made a few 12 km of circumference. It is the first temple built on the site around a rock.

It is a temple mountain, counterpart of Bakong, composing some 109 turns out of five square terraces and regularly decreasing... This temple was built for the worship of Çiva which one the king has placed a " linga " in the centre.
